If you’re looking for something reminiscent of Las Vegas, then Atlantic City has plenty of casinos and of course the boardwalk. Or perhaps something much smaller and quieter is your thing? New Jersey has plenty of small, historic boroughs such as Stockton, where couples can get married in gorgeous woodland.

Spring and Summer are great times to elope to New Jersey, with lovely warm weather albeit there may be summer storms. Winter sees very cool temperatures, and sometimes extreme cold, however you could get married in glorious crisp snow.

All states require a marriage license, so you need to ensure that you understand all of the requirements very early in the planning process. Luckily, it’s fairly straightforward in most cases as long as you meet the criteria and follow the state requirements.

Is Same Sex Marriage Recognized?

Yes! Same sex marriage is recognized in all states, and at a federal level, under the Respect for Marriage Act which was signed into law in December 2022.

No. Blood tests have been abolished as part of marriage license applications in all 50 states, so don’t worry if you’re afraid of needles!

Who Issues Marriage Licenses in New Jersey?

Marriage licenses in New Jersey are issued by the Registrar of the municipality in which the marriage will take place, or in which either party is a resident.

Do I Need to be a Resident of New Jersey?

Both residents and non-residents can apply for a marriage license in New Jersey. Residents should apply in the municipality in which they are resident, and can then marry anywhere in the state. Non-residents must apply in the municipality in which they will marry, and the license is only valid there.

Is there a waiting period to get married?

There is a waiting period of 72 hours for marriage licenses issued in New Jersey. It is very important to factor this waiting period into your wedding planning

How long will my marriage license be valid for?

A marriage license issued in New Jersey is valid for 6 months from the date of issuance.

HOW OLD DO I NEED TO BE TO GET MARRIED IN New Jersey?

Couples must be aged 18 years or older to marry in New Jersey. New Jersey outlawed the marriage of minors aged below 18 in 2018, with no exceptions.

WILL I NEED TO TAKE ID?

You will require your social security number, as well as a proof of your ID such as a passport or driver’s license.
