GETTING YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE

All states require a marriage license, so you need to ensure that you understand all of the requirements very early in the planning process. Luckily, it’s fairly straightforward in most cases as long as you meet the criteria and follow the state requirements.

Here is what you need to know about getting a marriage license in Minnesota.

Is Same Sex Marriage Recognized?

Yes! Same sex marriage is recognized in all states, and at a federal level, under the Respect for Marriage Act which was signed into law in December 2022.

Will I Need to take a blood test?

No. Blood tests have been abolished as part of marriage license applications in all 50 states, so don’t worry if you’re afraid of needles!

Who Issues Marriage Licenses in Minnesota?

Marriage licenses in Minnesota are issued by the county courthouse. They are valid anywhere in the state, but must be returned to the same county in which they were issued.

Do I Need to be a Resident of Minnesota?

Both residents and non-residents can apply for a marriage license in Minnesota.

Is there a waiting period to get married?

There is no waiting period to marry in Minnesota. So once you have a marriage license, you can get married straight away!

How long will my marriage license be valid for?

A marriage license issued in Minnesota is valid for 6 months from the date it was issued.

HOW OLD DO I NEED TO BE TO GET MARRIED IN Minnesota?

Couples must be at least 18 years old to marry in Minnesota. Couples younger than this are eligible for a marriage license.

WILL I NEED TO TAKE ID?

You will need valid photo ID with you at your appointment. Options include: passport, driver’s license or state ID.

HOW MUCH DOES A MARRIAGE LICENSE COST IN Minnesota?

The marriage license fee in Minnesota is $115, however this can be reduced to $40 by attending 12 hours of premarital education classes.

An officiant is required to solemnize a marriage in Minnesota. Qualified individuals must be at least 21 years old, and may be: judges, retired judges, court administrators, or an ordained minister from any religious denomination.

Those ordained online are able to perform the role of officiant for a marriage in Minnesota.
