Louisiana’s landscape is unique and diverse, offering a variety of settings for a wedding. All states require a marriage license, so you need to ensure that you understand all of the requirements very early in the planning process. Luckily, it’s fairly straightforward in most cases as long as you meet the criteria and follow the state requirements.

Here is what you need to know about getting a marriage license in Louisiana.

Is Same Sex Marriage Recognized?

Yes! Same sex marriage is recognized in all states, and at a federal level, under the Respect for Marriage Act which was signed into law in December 2022.

Will I Need to take a blood test?

No. Blood tests have been abolished as part of marriage license applications in all 50 states, so don’t worry if you’re afraid of needles!

Who Issues Marriage Licenses in Louisiana?

Marriage licenses in Louisiana are typically issued by a Court Clerk.

Do I Need to be a Resident of Louisiana?

You are not required to be a resident of Louisiana to marry there.

Is there a waiting period to get married?

There is a waiting period of 24 hours from obtaining a marriage license to completing the ceremony.

How long will my marriage license be valid for?

A marriage license in Louisiana is valid for 30 days from the date issuance.

HOW OLD DO I NEED TO BE TO GET MARRIED IN Louisiana?

Couples aged 18 or older may marry freely. Those aged 16 may marry with both parental and judicial consent, however someone aged below 18 cannot marry someone 3 or more years older than themselves.

WILL I NEED TO TAKE ID?

You will be required to bring valid photo ID to obtain a marriage license in Louisiana. Valid options include: driver’s license, or a passport. You will also need a certified copy of your birth certificate and your social security numbers.

HOW MUCH DOES A MARRIAGE LICENSE COST IN Louisiana?

There is a fee of $25 – 35 for a marriage license in Louisiana, which depends on the Parish (county) you apply in.

Will i need witnesses to the marriage?

Two adult witnesses are required to marry in Louisiana, both of whom will need to sign the marriage license.

DOES Louisiana REQUIRE AN OFFICIANT FOR A WEDDING?

An officiant will be required to perform your marriage ceremony in Louisiana. Qualified officiants could be: judges, Justices of the Peace or a clergy member of any faith (so long as they are at least 18 years old). All other officiants must be registered with the Parish Clerk in the Parish that the wedding will be held.

Those ordained online are legally accepted as a clergy member, and may perform your marriage ceremony.
